Light side points please

« on: January 04, 2017, 02:23:14 PM »

Hi all,

I live on the north side of Brisbane, Australia. My real name is Steven. Zeke Koori is a combination of my gaming alias "Zeke" and "Koori" is Japanese for ice as I usually play cold/ice mages.

I'm in the market for my next saber. I have an old Archon style FX saber which is great for show but I've always wanted something more. I'm looking for one I can duel with. I'm a martial artist specialising in Kendo. I'm starting to branch into the dai-katana so am thinking about getting a 40" blade. Feel free to give me your thoughts on how a long blade feels in combat. I've dabbled in duel-wielding in kendo but I like the power that comes from a big two handed sword.

Apart from the obvious love of Star Wars I'm also a gamer, mostly RPG titles, PC and xbox. When I've got my adult pants on I'm a new father to a son (Jedi youngling maybe) and I work as a knowledge manager in the public sector.

I'm looking forward to catching up with you all.

Cheers!

Welcome!

A longer blade seems to generally suit users who're taller - but that's not an absolute. I'm 6' tall and prefer shorter blades (indeed, I dual wield 24" blades sometimes) while I know at least one member who's about 5'4 and likes blades of over 36". You may want to consider getting a couple of spare blades in differing lengths with your orders - grab bag blades are much cheaper than brand new ones, and you'd struggle to tell the difference in my experience.

Make sure to bring your son up to know the ways of the Force Wink

Welcome and greetings all the way from the U.S! Glad to have you here Zeke! Feel free to ask any questions. Also to answer your question I couldn't really say since I've never owned any of the bigger/longer blades. I'm more of a 24" and 32" inch blade person myself. 24" for practicing my spinning/twirling techniques and 32" for when I duel with friends who also own lightsabers as well. Ah Kendo is awesome! I've been watching various videos throughout YouTube picking up different techniques and some also related to Kendo though I still have to put myself to practice some. Will definitely be keeping in touch when it comes to Kendo! Look forward to seeing your future sabers on here!

Here's a little video I recorded of myself last night. It's pretty short but it's me doing some of my casual set spinning to some music Smiley Hope you like and enjoy! Smiley

Welcome to the forum,

I know that there a few members who had 40" blades but that isn't a widely requested length.  Like James said, get several different blades of different lengths and you then can make a more informed decision on which blade type you like.  I prefer my staff blades to be at 30" and my saber blades to be at 32".  Im 5'8 and I feel most comfortable with those specific blade lengths.  If you have a desire for an exceptional two handed saber that is extremely comfortable and has no knobs or extraneous protrusions to cause interference to your grip, then I highly suggest the Arbiter.  It looks plain, but is the most comfortable saber in my lineup, especially for dueling.

If you have questions feel free to ask and we will be happy to assist you.  The only thing we ask is that you use the Search Function prior to posting a question as it may already have been asked and answered elsewhere.  The members here are great people and will do whatever they can to assist you.  See you in your other post.

Thanks for the welcome and the advice guys!

I've taken your recommendations and I've just purchased my first US: a Scorpion and added two different blades, both ultraedge heavy blades, one at 40" and another at 36". My current is a 32" so took an educated guess at two bigger blades. I'm about 5.7 so will see how the 40" goes with my height and will let you all know how it goes. Hoping it will fit in nicely with my dai-katana training.

Darth Genji: nice video! What length is the blade? Kendo is a good place to start but it's not as fluid as say Kenjitsu so I've got a bit to learn when it comes to the art of saber dueling.

KraytDragonPearl: the Arbiter did catch my eye as did the Reapers. Will keep these two on my want list. I'm not comfortable with single handed / small hilts but that's just my background in Kendo as shinai and bokuto are two handed and long.

Knowledge manager mantra : search early, search often.
