Dark Side Points, Please

« on: November 09, 2011, 07:56:54 AM »

So I've been pondering making some blade plugs for my sabers for a bit, and I've really dug the ones that folks have made using the rotary razor heads, but I just couldn't justify buying the heads (though I still keep my eyes open at discount shops, yard sales, and the like).

I recently trimmed all my 36" blades down to 32", so I had several bits of blade tube to use. I decided to go scrounge around my garage to see what odds and ends I could find that might work. What I found were several faucet aerators (that little bit you screw onto the faucet to get the nice stream) that just happen to be about the diameter of the blades.

Spent a little time making several blade plugs with the handful of aerators I had on hand. All told, they look pretty neat, and I think the subtle nod to sink tube sabers is kinda fun. I'll put up pics in the next day or three once I've got the plugs cut to the right length and I've finished some other mods so that I can get a nice group shot (I'm modding my Aeon, Dominix, and Dark Initiate [all v2s]).

So here's some in progress / pseudo tutorial pics for the blade plugs (still working on the mods, so my arsenal isn't available for vanity shots just yet). All pics should link to a larger version.

These are the bits of the blades (all heavy grade) that I had left over after trimming the 36" blades down to 32". In both of these shots you can still see the film inside of the blade sections.

Using an exacto knife, I /carefully/ cut out the glue and removed the film. The blades pieces got a little scuffed doing this, but since they're destined to be plugs, this isn't a big deal. The film isn't necessary, since you won't be seeing the blade itself once these are done.

Each piece is 4" long or so. The mean average depth of each of my hilts (Aeon v2, Dominix v2, Dark Initiate v2 and v3, Dark Standard Issue v2) is about 2", so I measured off the halfway mark on each of these before cutting. Accuracy isn't 100% critical, since these will be trimmed down further later on so that they sit nicely in the hilts.

These are the PVC pipe cutters I used to shorten my blades, and I will be using to make the plug segments. I'm not sure about midgrade blades, but heavy grade blades are TOUGH to cut, it's no wonder they take so much abuse.

Here's the trimmed segments for making the plugs, each is (roughly) 2". The other photo is a bunch of sink aerators and parts. I had a bunch laying around (I've moved a lot and replaced several of these, not sure why I kept them, but it turned out to be handy). You can find them at any hardware store and they run $2-$10 a piece, depending on how fancy, ect.

Here's a side and top view of the assembled plugs. The second and third are made from UltraEdge Heavy Grade blade stock. The rest are just Heavy Grade.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth ones have a volume of hot glue in them (about 1/2"), the last one hasn't cooled all the way, but it will be cloudy when it does, like the other two. This helps with light diffusion so that the beam coming out isn't just super bright. Whether you need to do this will vary from aerator to aerator, you'll just need to check them in a hilt to see how much light passes.

I used hot glue to assemble these, remember that a little can go a LONG way, and mind the strings of doom. Also, you don't necessary have to put these on the end of the blade pieces as they are assembled for use on the sink. The second one is, essentially, inside out. I thought it looked more interesting this way.

These now all need to be trimmed some (how much really depends on the hilt, and how much of the side of the aerator you want showing), but that's easy. When I've finished modding my other sabers, I'll throw these all in and get some vanity shots so folks can see them lit up.

pardon my possible ignorance, but is there a purpose behind having blade plugs?  or is it more just giving someone something to do?

its pretty much something to add a little bit of flare to a saber when its on display rather than just having the  blade in. plus it saves space since you can't really display your saber on a desk with the blade in it takes up too much space so the blade plug is a nice alternative.

Also nice blade plugs Dark Lord Proscidior, Titus Solvan  they will look really awesome  lit up.  Smiley

They're something to do, they look fun when they're lit up, and for display, like Big Boss said, it saves space.

Blade plugs ALSO have the advantage of keeping the LED module in place when there's no blade (like walking around a con) as well as saving you (and others) from "OH crap, it burns like the SUN" when you "accidentally" fire up your saber, sans blade, aimed at your face.

Interesting!  That would be cool walking into someone's office and seeing a light saber sitting on their desk.

another thing I find handy about these blade plugs is for saberstaff users; just remove one blade, insert blade plug, fire 'em both up, and fight with a great handled longsword...  they are excellent guard crashers (the weapon type, not the blade plugs, obviously...)

Working on it! If you look at my thread HERE, you'll see 3 of the 5 sabers in my possession are all tied up. The masking tape is JUST enough that the blades and plugs don't just drop in. It'll be a few days at least before I'm done, but as soon as I am, I'll trim up the plugs and get some beauty shots.

Got the initial stages of the mods to my sabers done, so that freed them up to trim and fit the plugs for beauty shots, so here they are:
As per usual, all images link to larger versions, and much light taking photos of the lit blades, getting clean shots of the plugs was tricky.

Group Shot:

This is a (blurry, sorry) shot of my Dark Standard Issue v2 with the plug I made specifically for it , you can see the top of the plug above the edge of the hilt, I think the polished and contoured side looked pretty slick:

And here is the same plug, more or less head on.

Here are head on shots of the other plugs:

You'll notice there's one less beauty shot than there were plugs. The one not show is the second from the left in the side shot form the earlier post. Unfortunately, no matter how I trimmed it, it just didn't look quite right. Not a big deal, since I've only got five sabers at the moment anyway.

All in all, I'm pretty happy with my scrounged-from-sink-parts blade plugs. I've definitely started to keep my eyes open at hardware, craft, and thrift shops for things that would work for plugs. I will probably also grab some rotary shaver heads at some point, cause I really dig the way those look as well. Hopefully this thread give folks some ideas for some super cheap ways to go about making plugs. One last "heads up" for anyone who is thinking using the sink aerators, if you're going to just go buy some, bring your saber along with you. Most of the packages are made to be opened and closed (so you can check the fit for the sink), so you can easily drop one into the hilt to see. I found several that I thought would look cool, but passed no light, and several that dramatically changed the color of the light coming through (which can be a bonus).

Okay, so I realized that the heads up about the color change was a little... strangely worded and vague, so here's a pic of one in my Aeon v2 (Aedagan Silver):

Off

On

So it can actually look pretty cool. Others I found at the store did a similar thing, but green or blue, I didn't, however, feel like spending $7 a pop on them when I had a pile of these at home. Depending on the starting color of the saber, this may or may not work (similar to filters, actually). In my Artic Blue DSI, it just ended up super dark. Obviously, in any of my Blazing Red sabers, it just looked red (didn't seem to alter the hue). In my Violet Amethyst DI, the core ended up being red (just like it is in the Aeon), with a Violet rim, so again, pretty neat.

OH, one more thing: If you sink aerators are used (like mine were), you might have some calcium buildup. Unless you're going for the aged to hell look, you can just soak them in white vinegar for about 15 minutes then rinse the heck out of them, that outta clear off the deposits. If not, CLR (or the like) will work. Just make sure to rinse WELL and let them dry for a day or two.
