The Witcher: Season One Teaser

I have been hesitant about this show but hopeful, but this looks pretty good.  It will definitely be a disappointment to fans of the Video Game because its quite obvious it is following the books.  I could easily pick out scenes that I recognized from my readings.  I just hope the choreography is up to snuff.  It is also interesting we seem to be getting to see Yennifer's origin...something that was hinted at but never shown in the books.

Looks phenomenal. but that is coming from someone who hasn't played the games or read the books. Which I think is good as i'll be going in with a complete blank slate story wise.

One of the problems is coming from so many only know the games, at least here in the states, of if they are aware the games are based on the books they assume the assumption was at least close.  It's not.  The books have very little action overall so I wonder if they have pulled a Helms Deep and expanded the action or kept it about the same.  There is a part with Ciri I too wonder if they have altered to avoid controversy. But I guess we'll see.  Last I heard Polish fans were still not happy.

This is kind of a unique situation in a way.  Like I said the games differ quite a bit from the books but American audiences specifically were only introduced to the Witcher through the games.  As such much of the Visual ideas people have come from the game.  A main example is Geralt's (Cavill) swords.  As a Witcher he has 2.   A Steel sword (well made but not magical) and a Silver sword for creatures who are only weak to silver.  In the books Geralt only carries his steel sword on his person while the Silver sword is stored on his Horse (Roach...he names every horse Roach).  The games however designed geralt to wear Both Swords as a game mechanic.  That image is so ingrained in peoples brains and they don't realize that it is not in the books...Cavill only having one sword irks them.  Bascially this looks to be a close adaption of the books but Game fans don't realize that.
    The books were written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski in 95 I think, followed by 7 more.  Some of them being Short Stories set between events.  Polish Witcher fans are very protective of it apparently and have voiced disdain for the Netflix series. Specifically about some of the casting

Regarding the sword thing, this video shows that he does actually have both. It may go a long way to allay any misgivings audiences may have about how faithful an adaptation the show will be.

its not that he has Both Swords...game fans are used to seeing him carry both swords on his back..its become his defining feature to them.  Put simply, this will please...or slightly please book fans but piss off game fans.  You have a situation here where an IP has 2 distinct versions and they are adapting one version that many are not even aware exists.

It's a times like these I'm glad I rarely read books anymore. Like I said, I'm a complete blank slate. And while there are many fans out there, the truth is they will probably only make up a tiny percentage of the total viewing audience.

As much as I love films....the film industry has stagnated imo.  The pool of talent is certainly much smaller than I think it has ever been...Max Landis talked about this before I believe.  I haven't seen a film that I couldn't pretty much predict where it was going within the first 30 minutes.  Books on the other hand can still surprise me.

That depends how you look at it. There are some people who complain that there are nothing but adaptations and remakes being made, however, whenever an original movie is made they don't go and see it.

There is a lot of fantastic movies out there that aren't massive budget, CGI fest. However, you need to seek them out as they don't get the same kind of marketing push as big budget studio productions. It also depends on which genre you look at. Over the past few years the horror genre has experienced a massive renaissance with some amazingly acted, scripted and well made movies coming out that focus more on tension and psychological aspects of horror rather than jump scares and gore.

Hmm, this is the first I'm hearing of it.  If these allegation turn out to be true that is indeed disappointing, but does him being a POS erase his knowledge and experience with Film and Film making?  But like you said, another convo for another time
