So, standard or UE?

If this helps, I prefer standard Midgrade for Red, but I think UE looks better for blue or purple (VA).

Im leaning towards a standard midgrade (thinking yellow is close to red), but was wondering what everyone thinks goes best with SY.

My SY initiates are UE but my single saber SY is Mid Grade.

I personally would go with just a Mid Grade .

I run a Mid Grade Initiate on mine and I wouldn't want it any other way. Wink

I should edit this to state that my wife prefers UE.

IDK why because other than the way the UE blade affects the light, I don't see a difference but since she has grown to love the color nearly as much as I do I consider her input valid. Grin

What exactly is the difference in color? Between SY in UE and MID grade? Is it even noticable?

I'm a huge fan of regular midgrade, and it looks great on my SY Consular.  That's my vote.

What exactly is the difference in color? Between SY in UE and MID grade? Is it even noticable?

The difference (in Burning Red at least - and I'm thinking that it's the same with SY) isn't really a difference in color.  I have two BR sabers, one in Mid and one UE (well, it WAS a UE until I could get ahold of another Midgrade blade - it's all better now heh).  When looked at individually, I was sure that the Mid was brighter and that the UE was a more pastel of a red.. but when held side by side I really couldn't see a difference.

I think the "problem" is that with UE, the light is spread even across the entire blade.  Midgrade blades seem to have the light more in the middle of the blade, which makes the blade seem to have more definition.  Since more of the light is centered in the middle of the tube, that light appears to be brighter.

Is it noticeable?  I think so.  Is it a huge deal?  No.  UltraEdge blades are a bit more money though, no sense spending that $5 if it isn't improving the look of the saber.

Standard Midgrade it is.  Thanks for the help guys!

It isn't so much a hue difference as a reactive quality in the blade. I notice with the standard that you have two bright points in the blade: at the emitter and at the tip with the reflection disc. with UE there is a very even tone to the blade. However, something I have noticed, and it matters to me a bit, is that in any setting where there is a high amount of ambient light (being outside in the evening when it is still fairly light, being in a lit building or room etc.) the UE blades wash out and you see the whiteness of the blade with the saber color coming up thru it. With colors like BR this is a bigger problem because it shows up pretty dimly and with a sort of faded quality that is not very attractive. I do like UE in the dark though and it show up extremely well on camera because of its evenness. I do not know how the SY reacts but you might see the color wash out a bit in better lit settings. Standard blades give a better color tone in lit areas and when I have to be somewhere with well lit areas or something I'll choose standard every time.

I really like the blue in UE, and in my heavy grade UE it looks really cool.  The thicker blade gives a slight area on the edge that kind of looks like the blade has an aura or glow to it.  Hard to describe correctly, but it looks good in my opinion.

I definitely agree with you about blue. I think it helps it look a touch... brighter? more intense.. something. I do like GB on UE, it is the only one I think looks substantially better that way. the rest look good either way to me.

Just to weigh in, I dislike anything that isn't a blue variant in UE.  SRD, GB, VA, DVA - don't mind it, but still prefer them in Midgrade.  I don't know why, but FO, SY, BR and CG all look more like garishly colored billy clubs to me than beams of light.  Maybe it has something to do with blue generally being brighter, so more of an aura can emanate?

Anyway, just my opinion.

Good!: Ehhhh... ---- Okay!: SRD, GB, VA, DVA ---- Meh(!): CG ---- Bad!: FO, SY, BR

If you like your Blazing Red in Standard Edge I think you'd be very happy with SY in the same blade-type.

Check out this thread by Kalibos.

Standard Edge

Ultra Edge

To me the SY pictured here looks as Xanden says, "like garishly colored billy club" or in my opinion, an office building fluorescent light tube.

Take this with a grain of salt of course, as I don't own an Ultra Edge blade yet so I can't say for sure.  Smiley

That's a good comparison just remember that the colors is different based of Kalibos' being an RGB.

I still stand behind the Mid Grade.

I will hold you to that!

 Cool

My new Phantom in SY should be in my grubby hands in a couple days.  I will try both blade types and follow up here on which I prefer.

I don't have SY but I'm gonna go with mid grade since that is what Kham is saying and he is like the master of SY.
