Black Star Sabers

« on: May 26, 2012, 07:51:19 AM »

I'm sorry it has taken me so long to get a review of the saber up. I wanted to get some good use out of it so I can give you all an accurate review.

Are you ready? *cue Degeneration X theme*

ORDER & SHIPPING

I ordered my Overlord with the following:
  • Color: Violet Amethyst
  • Blade Option: UltraEdge
  • Battery Configuration: Li-Ion Setup with BuckPuck
  • Sound: Obsidian USB Sound
  • Emitter/Pommel Finish: Nickel Plated Finish

I submitted the order on the evening of May 1st. So technically, they didn't even see it and begin to process it until May 2nd. I was sent an email with a tracking number as soon as the order had been received and processed. Since I live in an apartment, I decided to have the package delivered to me at work. Two other people at work had ordered Ultra Sabers and had them delivered at work, so it's sort a tradition now.

I received my order on Star Wars Day, May 4th. The Force was with me that day. I went to lunch and when i came back, my buddy was holding a long box along his shoulders behind his head. He kept making stretching sounds, and it took me a moment to recognize that HE HAD MY PACKAGE! The package was in pristine condition and the contents securely packaged! I opened it up immediately and pulled out my very first Ultra Saber. I was so jumpy and giddy with excitement!

THE OVERLORD

I ordered an Overlord and a grab bag. The grab bag I received was a blue anodized Liberator v2 in Guardian Blue. I went completely random and included an UltraEdge blade. But since this review is on the Overlord, lets continue on with that. But first, a picture of the Liberator next to the Overlord:

The Overlord is big for my hands. I have fairly small hands, wearing a size 7 ring or smaller. If I grip the emitter at the top, the hilt will extend down and almost reach my elbow! I swear I did not think the hilt would be this big. It's perfect for dual wielding. If I grip the emitter with one hand, then place my other hand below between the power switch and the cover tech knob, it is perfect for practicing Form I: Shii-Cho. For flourishing, it's a bit big for me. I can flourish it, but I tend to hit the hilt on my forearm during the turn. But this may be perfect for some of you bigger folk.

Here I am, holding the Overlord:

BROKEN DOWN

I broke the hilt down into a few pieces to show you what they look like. First, we'll start with the nickel plated emitter and pommel. For an extra $15, I'm glad I made the choice. It seems to make the hilt look more like the real thing. I took a picture of both of them, and placed the wrench with them for a size reference.

Next is the LED. I've pulled it out so you can see the wiring exposed. It's the best photo I can get, but it's very tight and I didn't want to pull anything loose. But the wires are re-enforced with some blue covering. I have no idea what it is, but it looks professionally done. On all of my future sabers, I'll be getting Quick Disconnects.

The final piece broken down is the battery pack and Obsidian sound board. The battery pack fits perfectly inside of the hilt. The speaker is fixed to the bottom and slides into and out of the hilt with very little poking or prodding. Initially, it was a bit tight, but with time and use, it seems to have come to a pretty stable and easy to remove condition. The batteries themselves are difficult to remove. I have yet to find a way to pull them out easily. As a matter of fact, initially when I had to remove them to place them in the charger, it took me a while. I didn't want to break anything. I went onto the forums to search and see if there was something special I had to do. Nope. Just plain old pop out of the side.

Remember: Do not heat, incinerate, or reverse polarity. And never, ever, cross the streams.

THE HILT

Here is a picture of the cover tech knob. Sometimes when I am doing my moves and practicing, the knob does get in my way. But I'd rather have the knob than not.

Here is a picture of the pommel.

IGNITION

Here is a picture of the LED ignited. It sits against my white door with the lights turned on. This is a regular Violet Amethyst with an UltraEdge blade. As you can see, the purple is consistent throughout the length of the blade, but it does appear to be a little more white in the photo.

Here is a picture of the LED of both the Overlord next to my Guardian Blue Liberator. The lights are on with this picture as well, and as you can see, the Guardian Blue is more blue than the purple is purple. Both are UltraEdge blades.

Here is my last photo of both hilts ignited. The lights are turned off.

In all three photos, the purple of the blade is reflected on the door and is more prominent than the blue of the Guardian Blue. That color on the door is pretty accurate as to what the actual blade looks like. But remember, this is according to my own eyes.

Overall, I really am happy with both the Overlord and the Liberator. The design on the Overlord is simple, yet elegant. The grooves don't get in my way and cut into my hands while I am holding the hilt. My favorite part of the hilt though, is the emitter. I really like the slots cut into it and how it lets the light of the LED shine through.

As a first purchase from Ultra Sabers, I am 100% satisfied, and I am planning on ordering another saber. I hope this review was informative for you. If you have any questions or photo requests, please feel free to PM me or reply to this thread. If you'd like to see my complete album of photos, you can view it on PhotoBucket by clicking here: http://photobucket.com/myultrasabers

Remember to be safe with your sabers! Happy sabering! May the Force (Light or Dark) be with you!

Nice Overlord!

For getting the batteries out, if you search around on here someone posted a tip on a quick mod that helps a bunch.

Wrap a thin piece of electrical tape around the battery about a 1/2" from the Positive side of the battery (mine go around the R in Trustfire).  Leave a little tab that you can grab with your fingers and use to pull the battery out of the holder.  Helps keep the batteries or battery pack from getting damaged by getting the batteries out.

Only thing to be careful about with this is you have to make sure the tape doesnt keep the battery from engaging the contacts.  The first time I did it my saber wouldn't turn on and I almost freaked out....

Nice saber. I haven't had internet for 3 days so yeah. I missed alot of stuff. This makes me want one more and in my dream finish and blade color. Tongue Might as well just go for something unique.

It is a great saber.  I love that color and blade.  Another tip to get the batteries out is to use a guitar pick.

I'm glad something I posted was helpful to you Master Nonymous. Consider it a payback for all the help your videos have been to me!

After this im looking at an overlord too, but feel kinda bad, because one of my sparring partners was going to get one as his fully loaded saber lol.

Too bad there isnt a competely silver version, id just get that and avoid the problem.

My Overlord rarely leaves my site. Even after all of the beatings and usefullness that I have gotten out of it, it really is still in great condition. What color LED are you planning on going with Master Nonymous?

I get them all with QD. I like red and green myself. I think the one coming is in red.
