The nose did come out weird, but after so many tries that was the least worse one so I left it that way. I need some more practice on mares, it seems...

Alicorns are the "fusion" between a pegasus and an unicorn. Princess Celestia, Princess Luna and Princess Cadence are the only three Alicorns shown so far. And since all three are Princesses, it is assumed all Alicorns are either royalty or nobles.

Other types are Earth, Pegasus and Unicorn, which are quite self-explanatory.

The captain of the Royal Guard is a normal Unicorn, so it's not really necessary to be an Alicorn to hold a title of importance. But he's your character, so it's you who knows what's best for him to be/not be.

Yep. Alicorns are basically just OP winged unicorns (although Luna and Tia are significantly taller than normal ponies and Cadance is a bit taller than most mares). Coming up soon, we'll have crystal ponies too!

Fun fact, Cadance was initially intended to be a unicorn (which would've made more sense) but Hasbro decided they wanted to sell more winged ponies.

Anyways, holding an important title definitely doesn't mean you should be an alicorn. Prince Blueblood is a unicorn, for example. But hey, if you want to, you can join me in being among this wonderfully rare pony type!

Nah it's cool. The word "Alicorn" is never really used in the show anyway; so unless you've been looking around the fandom or knew the word beforehand you wouldn't know what it means. Yeah, that had "hasbro" all over it. Faust did state that she never planned on introducing any Alicorns other than Luna and Tia, but then we got Cadence and we can probably expect some more.

Just throwing this out there, but outside of the MLP fandom the word 'alicorn' typically refers to a unicorn's horn (and the substance the horn is made of).

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who likes Cadance the way she is.... Perhaps it would have made more sense for her to be a unicorn, but I like her as an alicorn. One thing I find interesting about Cadance is that the speed at which she appears to age proves (to me, anyways) that Luna and Celestia only remained the same age for so long because of the Elements. Now that they're no longer connected to the Elements.... well, look at how much Luna has aged. I would imagine that Celestia's joints will start creaking soon

Hey, nobody said anything about not liking her I personally found the idea of more Alicorns quite nice.

Also, the theory about the elements still isn't fully proved even with the aging we saw. There are still plausible explanations for them, such as Luna losing her powers when the Elements hit her and as a consequence reverting to a younger version, and is slowly recovering them along with her appearance. As for Cadance, it could be that Alicorns mature just as fast as normal ponies, but stop when they reach adulthood. I still think the Elements theory is the best fit, but it's always possible to be proven wrong...
