Galactic basic you nerfherder! Do you speak it!?

« on: August 08, 2012, 04:41:47 PM »

Recently got my sabers back from ultrasabers late last month and have been slowly customizing them since, I just finishing them yesterday. Cutting the emitters and painting/sanding wasn't easy, but well worth it in the end and makes each saber more unique even though they are all the same saber model.  Cool
                                                                                                                                                                                      Before/After

Deimos

"In Greek mythology, Deimos (Ancient Greek: Δεῖμος, pronounced [dêːmos], meaning "dread") was the personification of terror."
The emitter design was based off a busted rib cage, which gives the saber that skeleton look. I also put three holes on the back of the saber for more light to emit along its spine and replaced the stock pommel with a TCSS pommel style 3v1.  With weathering to top it off the saber looks quite menacing.  Cool

Silvanus
"Silvanus (Latin: "of the woods") was a Roman tutelary deity of woods and fields. As protector of forests (sylvestris deus), he especially presided over plantations and delighted in trees growing wild. He is also described as a god watching over the fields and husbandmen, protecting in particular the boundaries of fields."
With this saber i took inspiration from fire flies and just started drilling holes all along the three emitter rings so they are all naturaly uneven. I then painted the the three top emitter rings gold along with the
TCSS pommel style 7 that replaced the stock pommel and I painted the grip section brown. I left the two choke points their original color since they look more like copper than gold which blends well with the sabers whole forest color scheme.

Fimbulvetr
"In Norse mythology, Fimbulvetr literally means "the great winter." It will be a winter lasting three years marked by warfare and bloodshed that marks the beginning of Ragnarok, the end of the world."
With this saber I wanted the paint scheme to be cool colors so I picked gray and white. I based the emitter design off of cracking ice and painted the three rings around the emitter white as well to enforce that image. I also replace the stock pommel with a TCSS pommel style 4.

Picture of all three together.  Cool

I just recently bought a dremel which allows me to cut through metal.

I like the rings-turned-windows, very nice.

Also, your pics remind me how much I love illuminated switches - I just can't imagine owning a saber without one.

That is some impressive work Boss, both the level of creativity and the workmanship.  I love how they're all essentially the same saber, but through customization (and the anodizing on the Dominix) they become VASTLY different.  The way you assign themes to each hilt is cool too!

Thats really impressive and i loved all your sabers. How were you able to cut the metal on the red saber to make the rib cage?

Greetings Big Boss!
I have a couple of questions regarding the paint job you did on the gold pommel lightsaber.

1.  What type of paint did you use to paint the gold lines on the saber and on the pommel ( I just ordered the same pommel to go on my Prophecy)
2.  Did you use clear coat on this saber as well...

I am totally new to customizing and I want to customize my prophecy...

What I am wanting to do is on the base, where the grip is, paint the recess areas gold, gold around the button area, and gold  on the section just near the shroud area.
Once this is done do you have to clear coat the whole lightsaber and can this be done with the electronics in it since I am not an electrician....Smiley
I do know I will have to rough sand the areas I want to paint to get them to stick....but the rest of the saber has a very gloss finish...not sure if was nickle plated or just had a high shine....but this was an idea I came up with while looking at your custom works Smiley  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I used krylon spray paint which is found in most walmarts and hardware stores. I didn't use a clear coat paint cause i couldn't find one good enough to stick and not look fuzzy, but I sanded the areas that were painted with grade 600 wet dry sand paper and did two coats of paint over a long period of time. Not all at once. Also you can paint the saber with the electronics in I didn't dismantle my sabers at all even when cutting! Just be sure to use blue painters tape to cover up all the holes to your saber like the blade socket and pommel sound hole. As well as the other areas that you don't wish to get paint on that way you have less to sand. Hope that helps.  Smiley

Just got my MPS style 7 pommel with MPS insert style 9 and MPS Clip, since I do not have sound.  I was wondering if you went with a vented insert and if so what is the BEST way to get that MPS Clip inside to prevent the insert from coming out.....tried the standard needle nose and that is not working so well at the moment.....

I just left the pommel as is and didn't buy an insert, but most people just hot glue the insert using a glue gun so they can easily remove it later on if they want to, most folks don't even use a MPS clip. tehe  Smiley

A dermal... hmm do you think that a dremmel would work too? im pretty sure its the only saw i have at my disposal at the moment. Also how difficult was it to cut?

LOL its spelled dremel. Odd how we both spelled it wrong when I previously spelled it right in one of my beginning post in the thread.  Cheesy This is the tool that i used, the exact one I own.

As for how difficult was it to cut, that depends on the design and whether you are going to weather the saber or keep it clean. The hardest saber to customize was Fimbulvetr even thought the most complex emitter design was on Deimos. Due to the fact that any slight misguided cut on fimbulvetr meant that i was going to have to sand it repetitively to get rid of it, which I did and believe me it was a pain, but well worth it in the end. That's why I highly recommend  practicing on a round pipe to get the feel of cutting into a saber. Unlike me who just bought a dermel and went to town.  Grin

Haha thanks and yeah i was thinking of practicing a bit first. The design im doing is similar to Deimos though im using a dark initiate V3 as my model and im adding a few more cuts to it. As for the weathering i was planning on doing some light weathering with a rust like paint
