Even used it in the RP combat I did on the forums, although I stole that attack from one of the Star Wars books I think. Corren Horn (sp) came in with a strong attack, and as the opponnent went up to block it he turned off the saber carried through and was able to reignite it under his opponents defense. Was only a sparring match, but always stuck out with me.

Take a look at Exar Kun as well.  He did that a lot with his double-bladed sabers.  Turn off one blade to pull the opponent off balance and make a quick strike with the other blade before they can recover.

For me, I just discovered that I have a bad habit of driving the blade with my arms rather than body (thanks VorNach!).  I'm sure there's others, but since I don't have anyone to spar with, I'll have to tackle them as I find them.

That was one of my very first bad habbits, and my ex corrected me repeatedly with shots to my shin with her staff. But even now my shins are "hardened" which made it fun in the Marines when he had to do body hardening by kicking someone shin to shin.

I definatley agree with shyness to getting hit, I went through that a lot when i first started using a lightsaber. But I dont shy away at all any more, mostly because the only place my opponents ever land a hit are my fingers and my legs.

Since then my most noticeable bad habits are:
1. Like my friend Lucien said, i think too much.  I live in South Carolina; in the summer it's 105 degrees, and in the winter its 34 degrees.  I know that when it gets cold, my fingers are gonna get smashed.

2. (this is the bad one) I tend to get so caught up in my defense that I never attack, and it always leads to my defense getting mixed up and I lose the match... does anyone know a good fix for this?

Get comfortable turning a defense into an attack (reposte).

I forgot who it is, but the guy that does a ton of fencing, he has a couple of videos showing it with a saber and its really your best bet. Basically you parry their attack and in the same motion attack yourself, which is either going to force them to back off or get hit usually (if your parry gets you inside of their defense).

My two bad habits probably are that

a) I attack too much, at least for the form I am using, Shii Cho, which in LSCA has an emphasis on defending first; I must learn more patience.
b) Due to the fact that I am tall, I sometimes employ the low parry to block middle attacks; I still catch it, but not as effectively.

I wouldn't consider it a bad habit, but a problem that I often has is that I do not know what strike to follow up with. I'm having issues chaining several attacks or parries together.

I think it's just my lack of experience. But it's the main reason why I don't post any free form stuff I do.

I've run into exactly this same problem.  I've found that if I slow down I can chain everything together much easier.  I have a feeling this falls under the "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" mantra I keep seeing pop up around here.

Hi Reiperx, I have to thank you cause this post gave me the strenght, really. I am sure I have a ton of bad habits regarding my sword practice, but this time I will go with a very bad habit regarding discipline.
I practice Iaido, in Iaido, the ritual of dressing and undressing yourself is hard, took about 40 minutes. It took me 2 weeks to master the knots for the Hakama and the Obi, imagine the rest. So, between family, work, etc. I became lazy, and started training without proper dressing protocol, I have been like this for more than 2 weeks. This stops today =)
