One of the only times I actually laughed at a wild inaccuracy about a state was in the movie Miss Congeniality.
Gracie Hart: Look, he had a gun. Kathy Morningside: Of course he had a gun. This is Texas, everybody has a gun. My florist has a gun!
Got a good chuckle out of that one, I did.

Yep, where I am, people actually come specifically for medical treatment, as well. Even when I lived in ARKANSAS--which gets some of the worst reputation of all, Arkansas Heart Hospital had a very good reputation and it was not uncommon when you flew into the city to be on the plane with heart patients coming in from all over the country for treatment.
(BTW, I would point out that there IS in fact legitimate reason to use leeches in medicine. Some old treatments are now new and cutting edge again. If you want to see something REALLY nasty, look up maggot therapy. No joke. I am not responsible for you spewing if you look at pics though. Be warned.)

It can be used on wounds that have necrotic tissue for debridement, since the maggots don't ever attack living tissue, only dead.

Burns, Necrosis, anything where tissue has died. Maggots eat the dead tissue and leave the still living tissue alone. It's actually easier than surgical removal or debridement. Docs just cut away the majority of what's dead and let the maggots handle the rest.

Burns and other wounds that have trouble healing/have necrotic flesh.
I'm not grossed out by things like that, though. The only thing that made me cringe was when the people talk about the sensation of how it felt, how they could feel the maggots doing their job. One my tattoos extends to my collarbone just a bit and I'm telling you, it didn't hurt at all, but the vibrations felt like something crawling through my skin and bones.
No, sir. I don't like it.

I live in rural PA. Transplant it to the south, and you probably wouldn't even know. There's a reason they say "Pennsylvania is just Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, with Alabama in between."

Yes, I know about the uses of Leech and Maggots in modern Medicine. I should have been clearer...the episode made it seem as if that was the most advanced medical knowledge they had....

Similarly, Texas is often considered redneck, backwoods, hillbilly country (though not to the extent of Arkansas), but Houston's Medical Center is top notch. In fact, two of its hospitals are world renowned: the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (the top cancer treatment and research hospital in the world) and Texas Children's Hospital (one of the best children's hospitals in the nation). Hell, the first fully artificial heart was implanted at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. People come from around the world for treatment at the Texas Medical Center. Yet, we're still a bunch of redneck hicks.

Coming from Arkansas, living in Kansas, people in the town I shall not name commented, "But you don't have an accent." I wanted to say, "We don't have near the inbreeding you guys have here either." Seriously, why did everyone in that town have the same last name? I never said it. I did tell a Texan living there. He agreed. Didn't even laugh. Just agreed.
They'd say stereotypical things and ask, "You're from R-Kansas, huh?" So, I'd tell them the history of how Arkansas was settled and founded first, became a state first and was named for the river, which was already named by the native Americans of the area. A law was actually written requiring people to say it right, thus we say 'Ar-kan-saw' the right way. Later, when Kansas also took the name for the river which borders both regions, there was no law to prevent people from using their ignorant mispronunciation of 'Kan-zuss' freely. Kansas is a copied name with a strong accent in it's pronunciation. Perhaps a demonstration of how ignorance and accents strike everywhere.

I hate home improvement. I've spent four hours installing light fixtures, and two and a half hours installing doorknobs - the worst part of it is that I never feel any satisfaction from it, only relief. My main motivation for getting a good-paying job is so that I'll never have to touch another screwdriver again.

I liked the show a lot better when I was younger. I watched a couple reruns a year back, didn't draw me in like it used to. Not like Spongebob still does.
