That's actually true. I think it has something to do with sympathetic neural connections. Even a forced smile will eventually start to make you feel better. |

Laughter has the same effect. I've been to one these "laughter yoga" classes and at first, I felt all kinds of ridiculous, but by the end of the class, I was laughing so hard, I thought I was going to pass out. And I felt GREAT for hours afterwards. Even since then, I've made it a habit to laugh absurdly for an unspecified amount of time every day, be it with a friend or even with my dog. It's good for the soul.

Not really. I work in customer service. Giving big polite genuine smiles is what I am well trained at, I do it all day long. A couple of our regular customers have nicknamed me "smiley", because I believe that if you are gonna work in customer service you be polite and helpful to your customers, you smile, and you act like you genuinely care (even if they are not such nice people). Doesn't make me feel any better if I'm having a bad day, especially when I'm in a lot of pain and annoyed about work related stuff. |

That is precisely why I will never work CS. But being an engineer isn't much better. Sometimes to truest answer is the a customer did something stupid, but I can't call it out that directly. |

Used a Jedi mind trick on a rude client today. She called back after talking to me (presumably to complain) and suddenly forgot why she was calling in the first place. She then apologized and just hung up. I laughed for way too long.

I'm a woman working in what is traditionally a male dominated industry, automotive retail. I always get a satisfied grin after a customers gone, when they have either not been happy with my answer and gone to ask a male team member the same question, or they have entered the store, ignored my offer to help them and made a beeline to one of the guys- and then in both situations they are redirected back to me because I will be able to help them when the male team member can't. Or when a guy comes up and hes being rude and purposely trying to have a go at you and asking tough questions because you are female and clearly don't know anything about cars.... and then they leave opening and closing their mouth like a goldfish with all the answers and more. I have had a guy standing in front of me doing that before it was rather comical to watch. I just politely smiled and asked if there was anything else I could help him with. Is it really such a surprise that I know my job?  |
