Long long before video games US Marine snipers are renown for their complete package and performance.

Compared to regular military the average US Marine is a sniper just because of the way we train...longer ranges for the common practice and record ranges.

There are sharpshooters among the regular Marine infantry, but they are not scout sniper trained.

Scout sniper is an actual MOS (military occupational specialty) or career path.  There is much more to being a sniper than the rile and shooting it...so to be a scout sniper is to be the best shot among a good of very good shooters...top guns.

So it is a prestige position that many look up to and the vast majority can not reach...the demands are extreme...these guys are ridiculous shots.

That is why  Smiley

Force Recon is a small group of the most fit, most focused, and to be honest flat out stone hearted killers...again, among a group of fit, well trained, and bad ass types...to stand out within this small group is difficult, yet the scout sniper is an elite even among the Force Recon.

I was talking a bit to a sniper one time when I was one the USS Essex and found him... creepy.

I always imagined them as so. I always enjoy sniping in video games, but in real life, it just seems.... unfair to me.

This particular fella told me that a number of guys quit doing it after their first combat kill... told me that some people find it too personal. I asked him how many kills he had and he told me three. I didn't want to do such a thing after talking to him.

It is a sobering process.

In real life the sniper training I had was for infantry support, counter sniper activity.  So if we got pinned down then a couple of us were trained to smoke out the sniper and unpin the situation.

For gaming...well that is a completely different situation...I love the sniper aspect...a hidden lurker is right up my alley.

Back in my competitive Quake and QII days I would snipe as often as possible...popping the flag carrier brings a certain satisfaction  Smiley

Yeah, I had NO desire what so ever, to be a sniper. Even when I dabbled in the possibility of enlisting(I still sorta want too, but I'm medically ineligible, thanks to my incredibly sucky vision.) I would have done ANY job above that.

If I had to use a firearm, I would snipe. Because I rarely had to, I would get in close with a knife. I believe the rest goes without saying, and for the sake of decency, it will remain unsaid. I cannot see anyone quitting after one kill, though. That seems odd.

With bad vision, the chances of being a sniper would about as close to impossible as it could get.

 Grin

It is a voluntary process that takes several steps, no one is assigned to be a sniper.

Not in the US anyway  Smiley

That is fact. Becoming a sniper is entirely voluntary, although spetsnaz operatives generally have considerable training in that field. Snipers are definitely my least favorote 'specialists' to come up against, as it is difficult to close the distance without being severely wounded (or shot in the thigh Roll Eyes).

Quick question - what does that have to do with combat? Do you have real sword training that you practice with your saber?

Smilies are a deadly weapon if used the wrong way. Anyways, youngkp, Stingie made this thread for combat to discuss combat. If you are a good duellist, good for you. This just isn't the thread for it.

Oh, I know, I just mean I would never volunteer for it.

Oh yes I figured that, sorry.  I did not mean to sound matter of fact and cold...was just finishing a thought.

Yes sniper at first sounds exciting but the reality of it is quite consuming actually. There are many many psych evaluations and there is a measure of wear and tear on your humanity, far beyond that of a common grunt even in war. It is a personal experience like giving a anti-birthday gift  Sad

In contrast, which was brought up in my one of my evaluations through personality testing, is that I had a high score towards sniper and a low score towards clergy and social worker.

Ah well...that is certainly a unique field that can take a toll on your soul.

Maybe we should get back on track?

Real world combat training...perhaps that relates to saber dueling?

As a real world Russian special forces assassin specializing with blades, perhaps the forum moderators could include stingere in the masters section...to approve you for giving advice related to dueling, physical training, etc.?

That would be cool  Smiley

Recognize your unique accomplishments, especially at such a young age.

Early 20's and a world class hand to hand assassin that really does not use guns...sounds like a James Bond villain...now there is an exciting life.

Isvana Khutchu or some such  lol   Grin
