Be who you are and say what you feel

Let's just say that I was glad that I am six feet tall and have a naturally long stride...

We used to get crap from the varsity football players about it because four years of marching band took care of the two years of PE credits needed for graduation. In response, we gave brought some of them out  to the practice field, gave them a two-hour crash course in marching, then had them march with us during out three hour Tuesday night practice. We took it easy on them, giving them trumpets, alto saxophones, and clarinets, but at the end of it all, they were miserable and never gave us any grief about it again, especially after I let one of them try marching with my bari sax and someone else gave them a bass drum. They were even more surprised and impressed when one of us came out in full uniform (which was all polyester and wool and weighed about fifteen pounds).

Well, in your eyes, you were the good guys, and they were the enemy. Of course they get the bad guy music...

I marched bass clarinet and was on the drumline for a year.  I had the smallest bass drum, but the harness would kill you in the 100 degree heat and man, did it get HEAVY after a few hours.  Holy crap.

HA HA!!!  That's so great about the football team!  P.E. was only required my freshman year, but the jocks never gave us crap.   The dance team did.  Those girls acted like we had it SO easy compared to them and it used to irritate the crap out of me.  I'm sure it's not a shock that I'm not a "girly girl."  Wink  I was a squad leader on the field and once in a while, I had to help the dance team because their formation was always ridiculously off and they did this "high step prancing" march that just looked hilarious.  Trying to map out their steps in conjunction with ours was a fiasco.  And I'm sitting here the whole time thinking to myself that if they had to carry a bass drum around or use all of their breathe to get sound of an instrument half you size, they might shut the hell up for five minutes.

Nope.  Tongue

And I don't know.  I never really saw us as the "good guys."  Our mascot was a freakin' yellow jacket and all things that sting are evil, if you ask me.  We won't even talk about how evil the band uniforms were . . .

At least the bass drums had that harness to distribute the weight evenly across your shoulders. My bari sax weighed 20-25 pounds (as opposed to the bass clarinet, which weighs about 15 pounds) and all that weight was concentrated on that one thin strap around my neck. To make matters worse, when we came to attention, the bari was held in the same position as an alto or tenor (parallel to the ground and at chest level, with elbows held parallel to the ground as well). Try standing that way for long periods of time. It SUCKED. At least I got very developed arms out of the deal...

The dance team knew better than to give us crap. We were responsible for playing the music they danced to during halftime at the football games. If they gave us crap, we just adjusted the tempo by a couple of beats per minute. Totally threw them off.

You seem to take particular effort to tell us this... I bet you have a secret room that is all pink, fluffy, and completely girly, like a Valley Girl threw up on the walls.

See, our dance team was completely separate from the band. Now, we had a flag corps that maneuvered through the band during performances, but they were band members and their sets were all mapped out along with the rest of us. They were out there practicing every day just as hard as we did.

Oh, the uniforms. I oddly miss the uniforms. Not the hats though. The hats could all go die in a fire. That was the only time I ever wanted to be a sousaphone player. They got to wear berets because the hats were to cumbersome with the instrument.

The shoes, though... We wore corfams...

Y'know... these:

Extremely high gloss. Looks awesome on the field when you have 150 flashes of light reflecting off shoes at the same time.

Absolutely EVIL on the feet.

They are made out of basically somewhat breatheable plastic. They get HOT in Texas weather... So much so that it's recommended that you wear two pairs of dress socks or one thick pair if you are going to spend a large amount of time in the sun (such as competitions). Why? People have gotten the tops of their feet burned just from the heat transfer.

Oooh, black shoes!  I bet those looked totally sharp on the field.  Ours were white, wtf.   Roll Eyes  Our uniforms had white accents, too.  They were purple and gold with those giant plumes in the hat.  I really did like the plumes.  We may or may not used to do "chicken wars" with them when the director wasn't looking.   You know what else gives you nice arms?  Being the drum major.  I was never the drum major, but ours had KILLER biceps just from waving her arms around for 3 hours a day.

Yeah, bass clarinet wasn't a hard march, but that bass drum, harness or not, was absolute murder on your back after a while.   I never played the bari, but I played contrabass clarinet in concert band and had to sit on a stool just to play it properly.  That was lots of fun.  But the thing sounds evil, like a swamp beast or something.   I've always been a fan of lower pitched woodwind instruments, so the bari is definitely on that list.  If you really want to play something hilarious, try the bass flute.  Like playing a giant silver candy cane or something.   Cheesy

Our dance team was judged separately (like the drum majors and percussion), but we were in charge of their sets and their placement.  They contributed to the over all score and the woman who taught dance at our school had no idea what she was doing on the marching field, so we had to help.  And by "help" I mean walk the dancers through everything.  I realize they weren't musicians, nor did they technically want to do practice with us all the time, but hey, YOU signed up for it.  Don't complain?

And dammit, you caught me.  All of my sabers of pink.  Like, bubblegum pink.  My hair is also pink.  And my eyes are pink.  I'm an albino.  Who likes pink.  I actually said that because a shocking number of girls in marching band were very, very prissy and I always thought that was hilarious.  I can't tell you how many demerits I gave out because they wouldn't take off their nail polish or tuck their ponytails into their collars during a performance.  Although,  quite honestly, I seriously don't believe for a second that the judges could see nail polish from waaaaaay the hell up in the stands during competitions.  My director was just ex-military and very into absolute uniform sameness.

Thanks for talking marching band with me!   Ah, memories.   Some of the best.  Smiley

We now return you to your regularly scheduled music nonsense, even though this IS technically about music and therefore, on topic.  Don't give me any demerits.  Wink

I never did band, tried learning trumpet in 5th or 6th grade but didn't like it, so I only played for a year until I was finally allowed to quit. Tried guitar a few yeas ago, didn't like that either(I love guitar as an instrument, but contorting my hand to make chords is something I DON'T like). I actually still have my cheap Telecaster knock-off, though I haven't removed it from the "gig bag" in at least 2 years. Now I play bass, and I like it quite a lot, but I stopped taking lessons for financial reasons, so I hadn't been playing much(I'm not good at teaching myself things), but now that I've been playing again, I'm going to try and return to lessons I think. I'd love to be in a band one day, but I'm nowhere near that level yet.

What the hell with this song sequence.  I think my MP3 player is trolling me:

1.)  Imperial March
2.)  SS Death Star
3.)  War
4.)  And Justice for All

GET OUT.

We won't even talk about how evil the band uniforms were . . .

Our marching band uniforms looked like Star Fleet rejected jump suits. Woof. It was the running gag every summer at band camp, "Scotty, beam us up."

Thank God I was in the orchestra. Our venues were always heated or air conditioned. The girls put on the 'little black dress' (I wish) but the guys all had tuxes. I lucked out beyond belief. I never had to wear one of the old nasty green ones from the 80s. By the time I was fitted, the only ones left that fit my height were the new black ones (that looked infinitely better) that were being reserved for the upper classmen.  Cool

However, my bass skills were later conscripted by the jazz band, and later on by the pep band for the basketball season. Nothing was written properly. Way too many flats in the key signatures.

I remember my sister's band uniform(she played flute). It looked like a blue and white version of a nutcracker.

Any love for Richard Cheese and Lounge Against The Machine?

This guy is brilliant. He intrinsically understood that taking popular songs meant for mature listeners, such as Nine Inch Nails' Closer or Disturbed's Down With The Sickness, and redoing them in the style of lounge music would make for a hilarious album.

Here's his cover of Baby Got Back:

I KNOW THESE GUYS!!!!!    Shocked

I had forgotten about them until just now, but they have some STELLAR covers.   I saw a ballroom dance to this, btw.  It was hilarious and perfect.

In the same vein, these guys also do amazing work.  This is one favorite in particular.  Listen until it gets going, at least:

My favorite polka of his is when they do "I Touch Myself."  I just start cracking up.

I love Weird Al's Christmas music.

I especially love blasting it in places that overdo Christmas music.
