Nox, they're wonderful time signatures. But jazz is primarily a dance form. Swing in particular is typically in 4. 5/4 and 7/8 are uncommon in jazz. I can say from personal experience that they are very strange to play in!
Try marching in 5/4...

Try marching in 5/4...
Hah! I marched Freshman year on clarinet. The next year our band director added a synthesizer part in the front ensemble. I'm in my senior year and haven't marched since, save in parades where I still play clarinet. I sometimes wonder if my director just wanted me off the field because I'm such a lousy marcher. On the flip side, the first half of our marching show this year is almost entirely in 3/4. Last year we had 5/4. I didn't march, but I've been in the front ensemble of a band that has.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I went to music school for almost 4 years and our jazz band played a LOT of pieces in 5/4. I never found difficult or strange myself. Now, jazz is not my thing. I enjoy it, but I'm really an orchestra person. Give me some Stravinsky or Prokofiev, which is written in "What the F**K is THIS?" meter in F# minor and I'm extremely happy.

Hear, hear! Jazz is fun, but classical...that's real music right there. Speaking of weird time and key signatures, I got a piece the other day in a flat minor in 17/16. Ouch.

I disagree on this. Jazz is like Rock, you can't lump the majority of its forms under one heading. I was taught that Jazz is like the dark side of music, it that it relies more on emotion and instinct than what is written. If you're happy, play happy. If you're mad, play mad. If you're sad, play da blues.

If you ask me what jazz is, I can almost promise you my answer will differ from the next person. I think of New Orleans Jazz, which is not even close to what schools sometimes teach as "traditional" jazz, yet both are equally valid and are still "jazz music." I definitely don't consider it dance music, either. It's "thinking music" to me. It's rhythmically and tonally complex to the point to where my brain just loves to sit there and pick it apart. It sounds like musical ADHD and I love it.

So I'm going to comment on an idle thread here and start a completely new conversation. What does everyone think about organ music? Bach, Boellmann, Widor, Franck, that sort of thing. I'm preparing for a major audition on the organ and I'm just curious as to everyone else's thoughts.

Pipe organ? Love it. Old school 1960's & '70s electric organ? Hate it.

When played correctly, the organ plays beautiful music. Not a fan of the organ at sporting events, though. Seems almost like a waste of potential, like a sports car used exclusively to take kids to school.

I picked up the new Trivium (Silence In The Snow) and Atreyu (Long Live) records last week and they have been spinning regularly.
Both albums are infused with all the nostalgic qualities I fell in love with when I first heard them at least a decade ago.
Each band showcases the refining of their sound along with improved song structure.
Very happy with my purchases.
