Okay, I need to know more. How does one mess up in front of Chinese aunties? I mess up in front of my redneck uncle all the time, but he just laughs about it. We're having a big family reunion in a couple weeks, and apparently there are "no excuses" when it comes to the talent show. I'm not really worried about how such a trip'll affect my grades or how the humidity'll affect my complexion, my biggest concern is that I don't mess up on the flute! The Chinese aunties are really well-respected in my family, so I want to make them proud. |

The first one looks painful. The second...if I'd been the one taking the photo I would've totally punked my friend by not telling them the tiger was pouncing, if I was sure the glass was thick enough to avoid any trouble. Which reminds me of a nice story from the last time I went to the zoo, which was a few years ago. Well, the mountain lion exhibit at the zoo was set up where there was this "window" where you could sit on the ledge, and a mountain lion could sit there if he wanted to. That's where the mountain lion was that day, and he looked pretty chill, so I walked up and sat down on the ledge on my side, which meant that there was basically a foot between me and the mountain lion. To make sure he knew I wasn't trouble, I gave him the "slow blink" the same way you can do with your house cat. And just like a domestic cat, the mountain lion looked at me and gave me the slow blink right back! We did this back and forth a few more times, and next thing you know, the mountain lion lays his head down for a nap! Yes, there was glass between me and the mountain lion, but it was still such a neat feeling that here I was, and here was this beautiful creature completely trusting, sleeping away like a giant house cat only a foot away from me. |

I won't pretend I know ALL animals' behavior. I do know cats though, and while thinking I had a buddy is only my imagination most likely, I definitely think we'd at least gotten the message across of, "We're cool here." And it DID cross my mind what kinds of obnoxious/threatening behavior the big kitty probably had to put up with, so it was nice to sit there for a while on that ledge watching that mountain lion just totally calm and at rest. |
