Yeah, but that crap is so expensive....I usually just eat some meat or cheese or something when I get back from the gym.

SHOULD I be drinking shakes?
It depends. Protein shakes definitely help in recovery after a gym session (if consumed within 45 mins after you've finished). If you want to get "big" or "bigger" muscles then you do need to consume a certain amount of protein and carbs every day. Protein shakes can help with that.

A tub of protein powder usually costs me about £35-£50 but lasts me a good 30-40 days if i consume two a day, one scoop per shake.

One thing, they are not meant to be meal replacements. More of an additional protein boost to your daily consumption.

I have no issues with regular old milk, luckily. I just don't like the taste, so I've found some alternatives that I DO like. But I never drink milk by itself, and I only ever drink good old regular coffee BLACK, so I don't keep it around and only buy them when I need one.

I usually drink black coffee, but I needed the calories.

Edit: for protein shakes I do smoothies with a raw egg and almond butter, thought I suppose I'm morally obligated to tell you all that raw eggs are a bad idea :p

I suppose it couldn't hurt to have a shake when I get home, especially since I tend to go later, and therefore get back late(like after 10pm), so it would save me from cooking, if I just move my after gym meal to earlier in the day.....but I'm trying to cut weight more than bulk up(for now, though honestly I'm not sure if I plan on bulking up) so maybe I should skip the shake....

I've been known to add milk if I need calories, any other time though I like it the way I like my Sith; Big, strong, and on the dark side.....

You can still have protein shakes if you are looking to get smaller. You need to create a calorie deficit, where your body is burning more calories than you consume. you can still have the protein shake after your workout and then have a salad with grilled chicken breast or something about an hour later.

the hardest thing i've found about training is eating regularly at the appropriate times. it can be a challenge fitting it in around a working day in the office, but it is possible.

finally, don't cut carbs out completely. yes that can lead to dropping weight quickly, but crash weight loss that quickly is not healthy. small steps/achievements in stages is the best way.

That's cutting it a bit late to be eating, if I don't get back until 10(not always, but not uncommon). Eating before bed tends to keep me up.

I try to eat at work, but it can be tough if I'm in a rush in the morning, and can't really pack my meals and snacks. All that's at work is candy, and I'm not eating that(organic dark chocolate is the only one I'll touch). Though we DO sell these awesome potato chips that are cooked in coconut oil, I eat those occasionally.

I've cut out most carbs, but that wasn't for weight loss reasons. My body just doesn't like them, I always end up with an upset stomach after I eat bread(except pita for some reason), pasta, or processed sugar. So I avoid them at all costs.

A super low-carb diet will also give you brain fog and you will want to kill EVERYONE within a week or two.  Carb-cycling is what works for me, but every person is different.  Some people say to eat carbs before a workout, some say to eat them after.  I find that it works best for me when done before (early in the day) and then, a nice plate of protein and fat afterwards.

I'm doing a "cutting" phase right now, so the lack of carbs can be unpleasant on my low days, but I know that a few days later?  CARB TIME.

Also, not all carbs are created equal but I am GOING TO SHUT UP NOW because I'll go on for hours if I don't.

Yeah, I'm noticing that. I may want to start carb cycling....though I did have some sprouted grain bread before. And I eat A LOT of peanut butter.(And yes it's the good kind). In fact I'd like some apples and peanut butter.....

Although I had a ton of junk and beer this weekend, so I'm avoiding the carbs(mostly) for a week or so.

I continue to revel in my massive lactase persistence.

Nutrition is a very personalized thing.  I do best flexible paleo most of the time (no processed food, dairy, grains, legumes, trying to keep oils and fats more less refined/more extra virgin) and get plenty of carbs from fruit and veg (I'm more produce heavy than what the strictest paleo afficianados like).  Normally I don't even do much in the way of startchy veggies because I don't care for them, but if I'm going heavy intensity when training for a dance completion  or if my weight fluctuates to its low side I do best if I squeeze in more sweet potatoes n stuff, and in the few days before I might get some bread too.  My competitions are more like a series of sprints (heavy jig feels like I'm running from a bear) than a long race, but I still need to replenish my glycogen stores, especially since I'm a bit lean in the carbs in my normal life.

Don't be afraid of fats either!  They are important!

Oat bran is great for people who tolerate grains well.  It has lots of soluble fiber!

BREAKING NEWS: I was just talking with The Mother, who mentioned to her friend when they worked out together that I am "becoming" a personal trainer, and she wants to be my practice client!  Yeah, murky legal waters in the United States of Sue Anyone, but I think I'm safe with a trusted family friend Smiley

Besides even thought I practice as much as I can on myself I need to get used to people who aren't like me.  It's easy to forget that most people who want to improve their balance can't already stand on one toe :p
