This made me laugh.

Some guy from Quebec was messing around with the Kylo Ren voice effect and...as it goes on, it starts to get weird.  Trust me, listen all the way to the end.

(This guy's accent is quite good, given that English is his second language.)

I think not showing up today is fine.

You were a little surprised by the class format.

There was  a lot to take in on the first class especially since it's been 10 years since your last time you were in that kind of environment.

I'm glad the instructor let everyone know you were just starting out.

It's a martial arts class so everyone will feel the the 'practice' dummy because that's what you are doing! Smiley

Don't be discouraged. You're going through the normal transition period of starting out this kind of thing new.

And, you are doing it alone. Not with buddy so that makes it a little more difficult since you don't know anyone. (I presume)

Keep with it. Make some new friends. It's a lot of fun once you get over the initial hump really!

I suppose "Sorry, something came up, I was called in to work" is always an acceptable excuse. Cheesy

I'm still not quite sure I understand the program though, there doesn't seem to be any "belt" structure. Just a bunch of people in gym clothes, sparring. Not sure how I feel about that, as I figured belts are there for a reason....

I don't know, I paid for five classes so I guess I should go at least finish out that, but I don't know if I even want to do this. Maybe it just isn't for me?

Oh, so that is normal? I'm actually supposed to be there for my second class, but elected not to go, because I was so convinced that was the "wrong" way to structure a class, I was quite put off.

I was on the wrestling team in high school. It's been ten years, but being wrestled with and such is fine, I'm pretty used to it.

I have to give the instructor credit, he made sure every one knew it was my first time, and that he expected them to help teach me, not just use me as a practice dummy(I still kinda felt like one though).

Technical doesn't bother me. Nor does challenging(to a point).

Although not showing up today might have dissolved my welcome, so perhaps I shouldn't go back.

I've been instructing in martial arts for a couple of years now, and we have mixed classes with everything from beginners to black belts on occasion.  However, a new student will always have an instructor hovering nearby to help them out specifically.  We also generally assign new students with an advanced student as a mentor and pair them so that the new student isn't on their own trying to just figure things out as they go.  I'd be a little leary of any group that just tossed you into the deep end and waited to see if you sank or swam.

That stuff was not done. He had us switching partners, and I could tell the people I ended up with only did so because I was their only option. No one really wanted to pair with the new guy who's been doing this for ten minutes, not that I can blame them. I am a little leary of going back.

Honestly if I were you I wouldn't. Even if there was only one instructor he should at least have assigned you to an older student who could show you the basics.

I'm not familiar with Brazilian Ju Jitsu but I've studied  traditional kung fu. throwing in a new student with no mentoring is an accident waiting to happen.

I just had to post this. I just heard from several friends in my last unit that a Tornado just blew through Fort Stewart GA.  I went onto Facebook and saw tons of pics of those still in the area, when I came across a particular photo from my neighbor.  That sucker was huge and it was in my old back yard.  Many people lost homes and belongings but thankfully no one that I know of was seriously hurt.  Keep those people in your thoughts and if you know anyone in that area call them ad make sure they're doing good.  I am seriously blessed that I got orders and was able to move to Germany.   Roll Eyes

Oh my goodness, that is really rough, and even if the injuries were less serious I hope everyone will be okay soon and that they will get good assistance in recovering from the loss of property as well.

And thank you for all you do.

My guess is that it would have something to do with figure skates or talking about how great Canada is.  Yes I realize that Brian Boitano is an American but he really wanted to be Brian Orser.  And South Park likes to pay special homage to Canadians.   Wink

Question to some of you with martial arts experience. Is it normal to throw complete beginners(it was my first day, wouldn't even consider myself a white belt, I thought you had to earn that) into a class with more advanced students? No one bothering to make sure they know the very basics, just have them start somewhere in the middle? The art in question here is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(don't know that that makes a difference).

No.  This is not "normal," nor is acceptable, if you ask me.  I've taught/done martial arts for almost 10 years and we never . . . EVER . . . just toss a new student into the ring and see what happens.  I don't even know who the hell does that.
