The Mad Professor

No.  This is not "normal," nor is acceptable, if you ask me.  I've taught/done martial arts for almost 10 years and we never . . . EVER . . . just toss a new student into the ring and see what happens.  I don't even know who the hell does that.

Even as someone who is an athletic CLOD with poor coordination and who has never taken a martial arts class I agree even just from the description ThreadJack gave of the other students' attitudes.  What he described sounds insular and snobby.  Attitudes like that from my gym teacher and other kids are part of why I do not work with others when it comes to exercise/fitness.  Too many bad experiences. Sad

Question to some of you with martial arts experience. Is it normal to throw complete beginners(it was my first day, wouldn't even consider myself a white belt, I thought you had to earn that) into a class with more advanced students? No one bothering to make sure they know the very basics, just have them start somewhere in the middle? The art in question here is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(don't know that that makes a difference).

ok in re-enactment we go by a policy of "the best way to learn is practise" and regularly pit the "veterans" against the "new guys" on the theory that "if they can beat the veterans, they can beat most people". But what you're describing is stupid dangerous. We go through the basics with them, match them against other beginners and THEN start mixing the group, and we only move them onto steel once they're safe with wood (it hurts less....sometimes)

Trying to eventually be able to do this.

Without wrecking property in the learning process.  Stupidly proud that I got the first two revolutions over my head, even though I'm sure it was sloppy as all heck.  I can already feel after only a few days of messing with my Flamberge that I'm building back a little of the strength I had in my arms in my old job where I had to move boxes and do a lot more physical labor.

(Let's be clear though, I would NEVER attempt this maneuver at con unless in an approved area and security was OK with people doing stuff like that.  And I'd be darned sure no one was anywhere near me in case I lost control.)

And I JUST managed the strike a couple of times! Very clunky without any footwork to speak of (also don't have room enough to move around the room and someday am going to have to mess with this outside), but WOOOOOHOO, I got it!

And to think...I was actually worried about not having the strength to work with a saber this size!  Gonna stretch out a bit and break for the night but...woooohoo!

Thanks! Smiley

The fact that I can see the maneuver from behind makes a huge difference since I'm pretty poor at being able to take an image seen from the other direction and translate it in to the right moves.  I couldn't have asked for a better GIF to work from.

And you win your 100th DS point as a prize.

And actually, practicing in a confined space (not all of the time) can help you develope a good feel for spatial relations regarding the saber, how long it is, how much space you actually need to swing it effectively, versus swing it flashily, etc.  I used to practice at least once a week in a 3 food wide hallway to make sure my swings and cut angles weren't getting too far away from my body. I'd also set up 6-7 boxes of between 2 to 4' tall in a room and practice moving through them, swinging around and over them.  About every 5 minutes or so, I'd stop and re-arrange them so I didn't get too used to the way they were set up.

In addition to the practical combat lessons all that can teach, it's also helpful in knowing how and where to swing so you don't break something when showing off for friends. Cool

Good point, I didn't think about that!  And thanks!

If I ever try to learn the footwork for that maneuver though--because I can tell that Kylo actually leaps and spins his body, not just the saber--that is going to HAVE to be outdoors, because there is simply no way I can guarantee what direction my saber will go if I screw up or lose my balance.

With your experience you'll be getting ahead of me very fast, seeing as what I have is a "grounded" version of it.  Enjoy!

Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast. He's definitely doing a 360 spin in that gif. And I appreciate the vote of confidence.

My wife (MJ) makes a pilgrimage to LA once a year it would seem to visit the fabric district for that very reason.
