Why do we pronounce sorbet as "sore-bay," but we pronounce sherbet as "sure-burt" or "sure-bit?"

My dog is stupidly healthy. I don't understand why.

Why is a square not called a "quadangle"?

The word "sorbet" is derived from the Arab word "Sharbat" (fragrant mashed fruit drink). However, the root is present in such Indo-European languages as Greek and Persian for example. The English word "sherbet" entered English directly from the Turkish in the early 17th century.

And here I thought they were both French. Point.

Ok, Mr. Smarty Pants,  Wink why do people say, "ATM machine?" That's pretty stupid.

"Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?"

Why is a square not called a "quadangle"?

Because a square is a specific form of quadrilateral that simultaneously fits the requirements of a rectangle, parallelogram, kite, and rhombus.

That's a pretty satisfactory answer. But why "square"?

Because equilateral rectangle is an unnecessary mouthful. Tongue

Ok, Mr. Smarty Pants,  Wink why do people say, "ATM machine?" That's pretty stupid.

Because that would be redundant. It's like say PIN Number "Personal Identification Number" Number. <face palm>

And a trunk is a "boot"

people do say PIN number a lot. never given it much thought until now! lol

and yet, a lot people do say gas peddle (although most will say accelerator. although gas pedal sounds better. or maybe that's because i've seen too many fast & the furious movies)

Also, "quadangle" is not a word. You can use "quadrilateral" or "quadrangle." "Tetragon" is another word, but it's used sparingly.

It's typically called a square because it's a regular quadrilateral (regular meaning all angles are equal and quadrilateral meaning "four sides" (derived from Latin)). The word "square" itself actually derives from Old French "esquarre," past participle of "esquarrar," which means "honest, fair." Presumably because all four sides and all four angles are equal, it's considered the "most honest and fair" of the quadrilaterals because no matter how you turn it, it will always look the same.

This gets passed around a lot but it simply isn't true.  The film version of Willy Wonka was released in '71.  My Uncle Oswald wasn't published until 8 years later.  His use of Snozzberry as slang more male genitalia was more than likely a jab at the film since Dahl had a great disdain for the film.

Eh  it was also in the original book that came out in 64, but first showed in  1948 Some Time Never"2. A snozzberry is a mystery fruit/flavor that knows no origin. Generally has an unpleasent flavor." But Because he  used it as slang in regards to the Genitals also adds to the definition so both are right, just like twig and berries, It is his word after all. Which version was the first he thought of, not the first you see written? The only way to know for sure would be to ask him.  He was human and male and like most of us......we revert to two year olds when it comes to sex jokes and everything reverts to the genitals........it is just human nature.  Grin Grin

Nope the first guy to ask for it was named Burt. "Hey can I have some of that stuff in the bin there?" "What this?!, Sure Burt"   Burt: "Sherbet?! that is a hell of a name Ted!"

Why is Abbreviation such a long word?!

Haha, I was originally going to ask why it's not called a "quadrangle". I used "quadangle" because of "triangle". Good to know that "quadrangle" is a word though.
