I think my frustration stems from the fact that at cons, people get on my case a lot, insisting I justify part of my costume, because to them, SW is the ONLY place they've seen an energy blade, and Lightsabers are the only kind that exist. They've never heard of psionic blades, aether swords, plasma blades, or any other form of energy weapon.
Why not avoid the hassle and carry a regular sword? Well, a lot of conventions have a problem with that. A huge problem. Even if it's duller than a butterknife, a lot of cons won't let it past the front doors. Others will allow it, but only for the costume contest, or only if it is never taken out, not even to pose for a pic, or to show somebody. Even carved wood is verboten or heavily restricted at some places. And I refuse to junk up a costume that's had hundreds of hours spent on it by carrying a prop made of cardboard, foamboard, or some other flimsy material painted silver. So I stick with my psi-blades, as a lot of cons don't restrict props like that so heavily.
and that frustration is understandable. I havent been to a con before and so i have never had this issue but i suppose its the nature of the beast. SW is rather popular and with current US hilt designs, its easy to assume you are wielding a lightsaber. But understand, that's also what they intended.

It's why I'm looking into crafting some of my own light-weapons ATM. I've got some sketches of a pommel based on the lantern finial of an NYC skyscraper, designed to go with MHS parts. Only problem is, getting it made. I don't think Ultra is doing custom parts, and it might be too far apart from the TCSS pieces for them to want to do it Some of US's hilts are obviously based on the SW movie hilts, which is why I recommend them so highly to cosplayers looking for affordable and durable replicas. But some of the other designs are generic enough to work for lots of things, and lend themselves well to customization.

I think that, for most of the Jedi, for most of their history, blade color was just a function of what appropriate crystal they could lay their hands on to be the heart of the sabre. There are stories in the KOTR comics, for instance, of people making huge quest-treks to get particular crystals in repayment of some massive favor; I have to think that they'd just use what they could get their hands on when not in that kind of debt situation. But... Then Taun Telon nailed the way I like to think about myself and associated it with my favorite blade color: Sun Rider's Destiny: loyalty, shares traits of adgean silver and guardian blue, but tends to be a "medieval knight" type (takes up a cause and follows it)
So maybe I'm speaking through an inappropriate bodily orifice.

This is actually something I've pondered on a lot.
Blue: A protector. Someone who is always ready to fight. A "do-er", if you will--but someone who works for good instead of ill.
Green: Someone who, in their heart of hearts, does not like confrontation. They are aligned to the Light Side of The Force. They are a "think-er", if you will--but work for good instead of ill.
Red: Hate, anger, rage--but also passion (not compassion, though). They burn like red fire in their darkness and work for ill, whether they are a direct worker (more blunt force, like Vader) or through calculated manipulations that can take years (more cunning, like Sidious).
Violet: Somewhere in-between. Someone who has The Dark Side within them, but acknowledges this fact instead of hides from it. They are someone who can take the darkness inside of them and use it for the greater good without letting it devour them and can turn the darkness of others against them. Red and Blue make Purple. Sometimes these people can be broody or have a short temper.
Yellow: The only "canon" ones we see belong to the Jedi Temple Guards. I've heard some say it's because the fact that those sabers rotate--but that's not how I see it. Going back to the games, Yellow is the standard issue colour of Sentinels. Yellow, for me, represents cunning, deception, and manipulation--but for good purposes--using these tactics against themselves to get information out of an enemy or to guard their own secrets.
Silver: Absolute Purity--not bound to any politics, not bound to the restrictions of either Order. Someone who serves the Force entirely, carrying out its will. I feel like Tano really represents what I mean. Her sabers are silver when she is no longer part of The Order (I know about the cleansing the red crystals, but I also feel like this applies, too). She wasn't part of The Jedi Order, but she never became a Dark Sider, and seemed to mostly serve the Light Side.
Those are my interpretations, anyway.

Oh... Sorry. It's just it was posted to me on my intro thread, and I didn't know. I'm sorry. (Also, not to detract or hijack, but I just now noticed it. It's very tiny print and I can't see well. Sorry about that, and is there any way to make it bigger?)
