If it's "a few degrees shy of absolute zero", it's probably not liquid hydrogen, actually; hydrogen freezes at 14K, which is more than "a few degrees" IMO.  (Not that the difference between 4K and 14K matters much to the drinkability of one's coffee.) I'd guess liquid helium, but only Justicar knows for sure. One of the instruments where I work requires liquid helium-3 for cooling; normal liquid helium (which is primarily helium-4) isn't cold enough.  (The instrument's operating temperature is 0.35K.) I wish I had a cat.
