I wonder if it's even possible to turn "I hate sand" into a functional piece of script in the first place, but then again just maybe if great care was taken. Lucas should have really watched a few dozen rom-coms before coming up with the whole Anakin/Padme storyline. Romantic tension really works when it's done right, if not it comes off as cringey and creepy, which is kind of what we got.

Edit: ugh I read "prequels" instead of "sequels" somewhere up there, disregard my rantings  Roll Eyes

Hayden has publically said George would make them do many takes of each scene and always seemed to use one of the last takes when they were tired.  Go back and watch EP II with that in mind and it will make sense....hayden's delivery of some lines just scream exhaustion.

Disagreements in direction aside, I dont think bullying any of the players involved is the answer.

The reason I single Rian Johnson out is because of his attitude.  I was more than willing to chalk it up to me just not liking his direction and leave it at that...but then his childish attacks on fans started.  Not just the "fans" who attacked the actors but anyone who did not like the film.  It is an attitude that KK seemingly encouraged.  Standing by your work is one thing but what he and KK did is unacceptable.

Understandable, though I do have to appreciate he probably was at his last iota of patience. After legions of actually toxic folk bash on something he made and was proud of, probably made him overly defensive of even legitimate criticisms. When something gets ugly that bad for that long even the even-tempered stuff can get polarized. Not defending his attitude, just rationalizing it.

Even there I was willing to give him that benefit of the doubt.  But through past interviews and such it became clear this is who he is.  He wants division from his films.  Which I don't have a problem with in concept but its not what a Star Wars film should be.

And that unfortunately comes down to the individual. Star Wars was born from invention and trying new things so a bit of division and experimentation fits right at home for me.

Also, just for clarification; a flaw I have and fully admit to is I myself am somewhat hyper-sensitive to bullying when it comes to SW. As someone who grew up in a place where it was not "cool" to like Star Wars, my skin is remarkably thin on said topic. I never tell someone theyre wrong for not enjoying some or even for being angry at the current state of the movies, I understand why that anger is felt, and theyre not wrong for expressing how they feel. However bullying is just a black and white topic for me. Its bad, and I never condone it.

Just wanted to clarify why I'm as rigid as I am when it comes to that sort of thing. Frankly I'm just happy the community here is such where I can communicate these kind of things without utter devolution of civility.

I wouldn't consider myself "bullying".  Do I tweet insults at Rian Johnson?  No.  For one I do not use twitter and even if I did I would not waste my time on something like that.  But if the subject of TLJ and Rian Johnson comes up I will let my feelings of both be known.  If I ever had a chance to speak to RJ personally I would not shy away from my criticism, of his product and attitude, either.   As for trying new things within Star Wars...I am not against that at all.  But the second film in a trilogy that is also the 8th film in a series isn't the place to switch tone.  I will again point to the EU.  The main "Jedi" books followed the progression of Luke and did it well for the most part.  But there were so many other titles and series that tried new things without altering the main heroes.  The X-Wing Series, The Legacy Series and of course The Old Republic stories.  Had RJ been given one of the anthology films or a trilogy of his own from the beginning I can almost guarantee he would not be as reviled by the fanbase.  You can't take a extreme left turn in a 40 year old story and expect everyone to love it.

Dont misunderstand, I wasnt insinuating you were bullying, I was just explaining my somewhat knee-jerk defensiveness on the subject that I am aware crops up on occasion. And on a larger thematic note I agree with you, the timing of a divisive movie was imperfect. Ideally episode VII would have been better as since its the new age of Star Wars, that would be the prime time to try something new, however it would also be a massive risk given the gap between III and VII.

Have a dark side point, I agree completely on bullying. That's why when people were going after Kelly Tran for her character (and Daisy Ridley, to a lesser degree) it was universally not cool. The flip side is also when Rian and many Lucasfilm execs go after disgruntled fans who simply didn't like the film by calling them "manbabies" and "misogynists" is also not cool.

“You think you know the depths of corruption that plague the Jedi?” Saso hissed. “I’ve seen it, I’ve experienced it, I even embody it. Every breath I take is an affront to their lofty ideals and idle Force worship… and so they seek to exterminate me.” He looked deep into Barriss Offee’s eyes, “they were not successful in purging me from the galaxy, and neither will you be.”

On this we agree.  IMO Ep.7 should have either focused solely on the OT characters with the passing of the torch coming at the end of 9.  Or (what I would have done) had it take place far into the future where the OT characters are gone and their legacy is in peril.   If you haven't read it yet I would recommend the Legacy comic series from the old EU.  It follows Cade Skywalker (Luke's great grandson).  He's not the model Jedi though...he's a pirate and a Death Stick addict.  Its a very good follow up that brings in new ideas yet doesn't crap on the past.

I've read it - not bad but a little too disconnected to be a direct follow up imo

Ah.  For me that is what makes it so interesting.  Where the galaxy is so far removed from the original heroes.  Of course it follows the EU.  Its funny that in the EU Anakin's descendants would Lead the Jedi and The Empire.

I think the difference there was quality of actor and story.  People like Ford, Cushing and McDiarmid could pull of the dialog.  But these newer actors, even though they are good actors, haven't the training and chops yet to act their way through a bad script....IMO of course.
Exactly

Conversely, I will never tell someone they are wrong for liking what I consider to be utter dreck. We all have our guilty pleasures of bad taste.
